Yosia Bana is 31 years old. He leads a group of eight farmers - Sesawi A2 - in Usapi Sonbai Village, Kupang District of East Nusa Tenggara Province. It takes about one and a half hours to drive from Kupang City.

Yosia is married and has two children named Yesika, 7 years old - in the 2nd grade of Elementary School and Riksa 3 years old - not at school yet. Yosia is living his life farming in Usapi Sonbai Village. He leans on the crops to generate money in order to fulfill his family's needs. He plants corn that can be sold in the market and also can be consumed by his family. But the income generated from selling corn is unstable, depending on the season. And it usually cannot fully cover his family's needs.
The difficulty in meeting his family's needs leads Yosia to find another way to better meet his family's needs. This is the reason for Yosia’s involvement in TLM Cattle Fattening Program. He hopes that by joining this program, he will be able to get a big profit after selling the fattened cattle.
He is requesting a loan of IDR 3,300,000 from TLM to buy young cattle to be fattened over a 12-month period. The other members of Sesawi A2 are also requesting loans to buy cattle to be fattened.

Journal on Sesawi A2 Group

Entrepreneur: Sesawi A2 Group
Location: Usapi Sonbai, Indonesia

Dear Kiva Lenders,

On the 23rd of July 2009, TLM Kiva Field Officer and the Kiva Fellow – Cissy went to Usapi Sonbai Village which is situated for about 29 Km from Kupang City. They passed a meander and bumpy road to enter the village. Most of community in this village lean their lives on the agricultural sector.

When they arrived in the village, they met Yosia Bana the group leader of Sesawi A2 Group in the house of the other member of cattle fattening group. He was together with the other group members who have also received loan to buy cattle. The Kiva fellow then verified the Kiva borrower. As Cissy needed to see the loan agreement, Yosia then had to return home to show his loan agreement to Cissy.

The distance to Yosia’s house is not too far from the house that the field officer and Kiva fellow met him before. His house is constructed by palm leaves roof and dirt floor. After they arrived in Yosia’s house, Yosia then took the loan agreement to show to the Kiva fellow. He also then was interviewed in his house.

Yosia has received a loan amounting to IDR 3,300,000. This loan has been spent to buy cattle to be fattened for twelve months. This is the first time for Yosia to have a cattle loan and he is currently in the second month of the loan. His cattle grow well and this makes him happy.

He usually wakes up at 5 am everyday. He then goes to his farm to prepare the food and water for the cattle. After that, he continues his activity to cultivate the farm up to 3 pm. As the other farmers in this village, Yosia plants corn that he can sell in the market to meet his family needs. There is no local market available in Usapi Sonbai Village. To sell his corn, Yosia usually has to go to the Inpres Market in Kupang City.

After cultivate the farm, Yosia goes back to the cattle stall to feed the cattle. After all of his work completed on the farm he returns home at 6 am.

Yosia is really keen to feed the cattle as he wants to get the best result of fattening the cattle. He plans to use the profit that he will generate from the fattened cattle selling to meet his family needs and to be saved for the education of his children. Yosia also hopes that the assistance that they received will continually provided for the poor people like them and helps them in improving their living standard.

Thank you Kiva Lenders!!!
