Oktofianus Tibnoni is a 35 year old man. He leads SESAWI B1 Group - a group of 8 farmers in Usapi Sonbai Village, Kupang District of East Nusa Tenggara Province. Oktofianus has been living in this village since he was a child. His parents are only poor farmers who couldn’t afford to send him to the high school. As a result, Oktofianus only has a primary education.

Oktofianus is a married man with one child aged 10 months. Due to the low level of education that Oktofianus has, he can not get a better permanent job in the city. This is the reason why Oktofianus works as a farmer who plants corn, peanuts and vegetables to pay for his family's needs. The biggest challenge for Oktofianus is the increasing of prices in the market that makes it difficult for him to support his family. His income generated from farming is not enough to cover all of his family's needs.

The difficulties that Oktofianus faces have motivated him to find another way to support his family. One of the alternatives that has become his preference is to fatten cattle because of the high demand and good price for the fattened cattle. To fatten cattle Oktofianus needs capital to buy the young cattle and he can not afford it as a poor farmer.

This is the reason why Oktofianus is interested in joining the cattle fattening program with the other group members. He is requesting a loan amounting to IDR 3,200,000 to buy young cattle to be fattened for 12 months. Oktofianus hopes that through the cattle fattening program he will be able to cover all of his family needs. The other group members are also requesting a loan as they want to improve their living standard.
Note: When the group picture was taken, Erny and Fransina were replaced by their family member.

Journal on Sesawi B1 Group

Entrepreneur: Sesawi B1 Group
Location: Usapi Sonbai, Indonesia

Dear Kiva Lenders,

Last Thursday, our Kiva Field Officer and our Kiva Fellow - Cissy went to Usapi Sonbai Village to verify the Kiva borrowers and to get an update on Sesawi B1 Group. They took for about one and a half hours to get into the village. The road in this village hasn’t been asphalted yet.

When they arrived in the village, they met with Oktovianus Tibnoni in his house. The house is small and constructed by the palm leaves roof and dirt floor. Oktovianus was talking with his neighbor in his neighbor house when the field officer and the Kiva Fellow came. He then returned home and welcomed the field officer and the Kiva fellow with open arms. Oktovianus then invited the field officer to his cattle stall to see the cattle. He was interviewed at the cattle stall.

Oktovianus is the group leader of Sesawi B1 Group. He has received a loan amounting to IDR 3,200,000. This loan has been spent to buy cattle to be fattened over a 12 month period. Currently, Oktofianus is in the second month of the loan. He is keen to feed the cattle because he believes that his effort will earn a good profit.

He usually starts his daily activities at 05.00 am by cultivating his farm and feeding the cattle twice a day. He usually returns home in the evening. He is really happy for receiving the loan as he only have to fattened the cattle over 12 months and after that the cattle can be sold and he can get the profit.

Oktovianus said that there were some microfinance institutions in this area offered him their loan products, but he didn’t interested to join them as the interest rate charged is too high and they also asked for the collateral that he can not afford as he only a poor farmer.

According to Oktovianus, his family’s live is run well. His child just aged 11 months. He hopes that the loan that he got can motivate him to work hard so he can change and improve the living standard of his family and minimize his worries about the future.

He is really thankful for the loan that he has received. He is sure that the loan is really useful for the poor people like them.

Thank you Kiva lenders,

TLM Staff
